Description

Kumily, when known as Kuzhumoor, used to be the capital of the Thekkumkoor Kings. In the eighteenth century, Marthanda Varma of Travancore vanquished the Thekkumkoor Rajas. The Kingdom of Travancore involved a large portion of advanced southern Kerala, the region of Kanyakumari, and the southernmost pieces of the neighboring territory of Tamil Nadu.

After India's freedom, Travancore converged with Cochin to shape Travancore-Cochin which once more, sometime later, got together with the Malabar region of Madras State to frame Kerala.

Later the Travancore rulers allowed control of the locale to their serf, the Lord of (Poonjar Thamburan). Till the nineteenth century, the masters of Poonjar represented the locale and the Travancore rulers visited the spot once in a while, with the sole aim of chasing.

It was with the appearance of the British in the area that it experienced extraordinary changes. The British either purchased or got on rent, tremendous stretches of land, and sloping territories of this area from the primitive masters or from the regal province of Travancore.

They changed over the forestlands to manors of tea, espresso, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, and different flavors. Individuals from Tamil Nadu and Kerala were brought to work in the manors.

The 1920s saw the appearance of Malayalis to this region in extraordinary numbers. There are various tales about the occasions that prompted this. As indicated by one, the Malayali pioneers here purchased land from the relatives of a certain Ankur Rawther, a shepherd who lived around there in the nineteenth century.

Rather should have helped the then ruler of Travancore and his escort discover out of the timberland when they lost all sense of direction in a far off region while on a chase. The appreciative ruler remunerated him with sections of land of forestland. The lord was Sree Moolam Thirunal who was the decision maharajah of Travancore somewhere in the range of 1885 and 1924.

Another story is that when the lord came to direct the development of the Mullaperiyar dam during the 1890s, Ankur Rawther served him sheep's milk. His graciousness contacted the ruler and that was what roused the lord to blessing his land.
